The area is a bar/restaurant/art mecca that has recently seen the boost of a lot of trendy clothing stores and several really good hotel. Still a little rough and not as chic as SoHo but with a great atmosphere that reminds a little about how it was in New York 20 years ago.
Hotel on Rivington is one of the hotels that give you the best view of the Lower East Side and the East River, with windows that goes from floor to ceiling. Even when you stand in the shower, you have an awesome view over Manhattan.

If you go to the north of Ludlow it will take you to the East Village, go west on East Houston and you will get to NoLita (North of Little Italy) and SoHo.
